W listopadzie 1989 roku odbyło się międzynarodowe sympozjum The Slavs in the Eyes of the Occident, the Occident in the Eyes of the Slavs, zorganizowane przez Instytut Filologii Polskiej Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego. Było to trzecie z cyklu spotkań badawczych (wcześniejsze sesje: Messianisme et slavophilie, Kraków 1985 oraz At the Origins of the Slav Cultures: Myths and Reality, Bad Homburg 1987). 

Artykuły pokonferencyjne opublikowane zostały w tomie studiów The Slavs in the Eyes of the Occident, the Occident in the Eyes of the Slavs, ed. by M. Cieśla-Korytowska, Universitas/Columbia University Press  1992.
